My final degree collection was entitled Ethereality.

The ethereality collection responds to human growth through movement, contrast and change as visualised through the natural world.

Ethereality means; “the quality or state of being light, insubstantial, and otherworldly.” (2024) but the collection takes on its own meaning of the word. Ethereal relates to the collection’s light, delicate and fluid visualisation, with the reality of the tangible, hard and firm texture and block shapes. The combination and contrast of these two feelings relate to the organic outlook on human growth coinciding with the natural world. It encapsulates the developments we experience as we move through life, with natural changes and positive and negative experiences.

The design process evolves and grows as the theme suggests. Taking images from nature and progressing into collages, shapes, textures to final clothing elements. Once designed this process of development is taken into garment and material construction, with extensive experimentation of maturing flat and even materials into dimensional and sensual feeling and appearance.

This collection features an array of dynamic pieces explored through experimentation of fabric and texture. The collection introduces textile processes, fabric manipulation investigation, and material development analysis. Highlighting a variety of natural materials the garments depict the unique corruption of contrasting weight of materials seen through techniques of smocking, shirring and embroidery. Leather construction and leather texturing are key techniques to build the collection’s depth and contrast, emulating feelings associated with nature.
